Thames Students Win Waikato Secondary Schools Sports Awards

Thames High School made  a strong showing at the Waikato Sports Awards with trophies that reflect years of hard work. Congratulations to students Cole McDowell (finalist in swimming); Casey Owen (first place in squash) Danielle Goodall (first place in orienteering); Matthew Goodall (first place in orienteering); and Nico Fox (winner of the major award as a volunteer referee). All these students have achieved at the national level in their sport.

Jenny Bloom, head of department for PE, explained that the Thames High School approach “provides pathways to high performance sports” by engaging students in new activities and providing the encouragement and support that helps them reach the next level. With sports students might not be familiar with—such as orienteering or multisport challenges—she shows videos of past teams, encouraging students to “just have a go and see if you like it.”

Congratulations to these impressive student athletes and the teachers who support their achievement.
