The 2015 high school rugby season has come to an end, with Thames High teams doing well in their respective divisions.
The Thames Valley Secondary School Rugby Finals were held at Paeroa Domain.
Three THS teams were competing for trophies, and our school sports coordinator Kelly Broughton watched the action:
“It was great to see our teams supporting one another as players lined up to clap the teams onto the field and cheer each other on. The first game saw our 4th Grade competing against Waihi College who they’ve had close games with all season. Our team raced out to a 32-7 lead by halftime, but Waihi came back and closed the gap to 32-26. Our players then dug deep and scored again to take the win 46-31 at the end of the game. The 4th Grade remained unbeaten all season and hold the Frank Trenor Trophy, Ted Engebretsen Shield and the Bob Passey Trophy.
Our Development team was up next against Paeroa, who they’ve had close wins over through the season. We scored early to take a 5-0 lead, with the game then going back and forth from try line to try line. At half time the score was 10-7 to us. In the second half both teams scored unconverted tries and then with only a couple of minutes to go Paeroa dotting down over their line to win the L Berry Cup 17-15.
The final game was for the Coulter Cup between our 1st XV and Waihi College which was a very physical battle with both teams determined to win. Our team recorded two penalties against Waihi’s one penalty, and a try to make the score 8-6 at half time. In the second half the game seesawed with each team on attack and then defending but it wasn’t until the very last minutes that Waihi College scored again making it 13-6 at the final whistle.”
