Celebrating Matariki ki Te Kauaeranga: A Day of Connection, Culture, and Community

On Friday, 26 June, our kura came alive with the spirit of Matariki. It was a beautiful, sun-filled day of reflection, celebration, and coming together as one big community. We were incredibly privileged to host and collaborate with Kaumātua, Te Kura o Te Kauaeranga / Thames South Primary, Te Kōhanga Reo o Matai Whetu, and Te Korowai Hauora o Hauraki.

From our energetic taiohi / youth to our esteemed guests, the day was packed with laughter, learning, and unforgettable moments.

Hands-On History & High-Energy Games

Our students and visitors dived into a fantastic rotation of cultural activities that kept everyone moving and creating:

  • Tītītorea & Mau Rākau: Echoes of rhythmic wooden sticks and powerful traditional martial arts movements filled the air as participants practised coordination and focus.

  • Horohopu & Tapuwae: Energy levels skyrocketed during these fast-paced traditional games, which brilliantly blend elements of frisbee, netball, and tag rugby.

  • Manu Aute: Over in the Art Department, creativity took flight! Everyone loved crafting beautiful, modern interpretations of traditional Māori kites.

  • Māra to Plate: A massive highlight in the horticulture space! Whaea Jo and Whaea Tess shared their incredible expertise, showing everyone how to roast delicious kūmara over an open fire.

Feeding the Body and Soul

After working up an appetite, everyone gathered for a stunning shared lunch. A massive shoutout to Gateway Catering for providing a beautiful, comforting meal that truly brought everyone together over good food and even better conversation. It was a stellar moment of waiata, storytelling, and connection.

Ngā Mihi Nui: A Huge Thank You!

An event of this scale doesn’t just happen on its own. We want to extend a massive thank you to the dedicated committee who planned and project-managed the entire day.

A special acknowledgment goes to our wonderful Manukura Māori leaders, Kyah and Zaydee, for their outstanding leadership, and to every single person who rolled up their sleeves to make the day so magical.

Matariki is about acknowledging the past, celebrating the present, and looking forward to the future—and this day perfectly captured it all.

Mānawatia a Matariki! 🌟
