Bush Survival at Lower Mangatawhiri Campground 2024

On Thursday 9 May, our taiohi embarked on an exciting adventure to the Lower Mangatawhiri Campground, where they built their own bivouacs to sleep in overnight as part of the Outdoor Education Programme.

Armed with a survival knife, a rope, and a tarp, they utilized these tools along with natural resources found in the area to construct warm and watertight shelters.

During our stay, Whaea Rawinia enriched our experience with a lesson on Māori tikanga, teaching us how to respect and responsibly use natural resources. She also emphasized the importance of showing Manaakitanga to each other and practising Kaitiakitanga towards Te Taiao / the natural world, while building our shelters.
